Good Practice Advice

Good Practice Advice for Volunteer Involving Organisations

Volunteering Wirral promotes best practice in volunteer management to ensure that volunteer have the best experience possible whilst giving their time, and to help organisations to recruit and retain their volunteers by offering fair, accessible and well organised volunteering opportunities. Our good practice advice and support is completely free to registered organisations because of our funding from The Big Lottery Fund.

One-to-one support sessions with our Development Team

Our team of experienced development officers have a wide range of voluntary experience between them and can provide advice and information on many volunteering issues. In most cases a member of the team will come to visit you and will spend as much time as necessary helping you to improve the ways in which you work with volunteers. Quite often this can be done over the course of several visits to allow you to implement new systems and to make changes gradually.

It doesn't matter what size your organisation is and whether you have paid volunteer coordinators or you are entirely volunteer-led - we can always help you to look at the ways in which your organisation can work with volunteers, making the best use of the resources that you have available.

We don't have a set schedule or checklist for working with organisations, we will take our lead from you and the priorities of your organisation, however these are some of the issues that we are commonly called to help with:

  • Guidance on how to set up a volunteer programme and help in developing new volunteering opportunities
  • How best to recruit and retain volunteers
  • Help to set up volunteering related policies and practices
  • General advice on volunteer management issues
  • Advice on providing expenses
  • Help and support on volunteering and the law (CRB checks, Safeguarding, Health and Safety, Insurance etc.)

Training events and workshops

We offer training and workshops aimed at helping you to work effectively with volunteers. These can take the form of either one-off training sessions on specific topics, or informal workshops and information sessions held as part of the Volunteer Organisers' Forum. If you have specific issues that you would like us to cover as part of a training programme, please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. We will often circulate details of third party training that we think you might find useful. You can sign up to our emailing list using the email link above.

Email information

We often receive information from other organisations that we think might be of interest to Volunteer Organisers in Wirral. This information can include events, training, changes to the law and opportunities to access funding or expert advice. If you would like to join this mailing list please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

A range of best practice publications

We can often access printed literature and web-based information that is of use to volunteer organisers. If you have a particular area of interest that you would like to learn more about within the world of volunteering, but you don't have a specific question, then we may be able to help you access books, information sheets, websites and training courses to suit your needs. If we don't have the answer we quite often know someone that does!

Volunteer Organisers' Forum

All registered organisations are entitled to send a member of their team to our quarterly forum. This will allow you to stat up to date with the latest news and information relating to volunteering. More information is available in the events section of this site.
