Why Volunteer?
There are many different reasons why people choose to become a volunteer. Each person has their own unique set of reasons for getting involved. Today it is widely acknowledged that volunteering is a two way street and that, as well as brining benefits to other people, volunteers should benefit as well. Although you will not be paid for volunteering (aside from reasonable out of pocket expenses) there are lots of other benefits that might apply to you. Here are just a few of them:
- Learn new skills
- Meet new people
- Enhance your CV or UCAS form
- Career progression
- Build self confidence
- Try something new
- Feel less isolated
|
- Put your spare time to good use
- Pathway to employment
- Feel part of the community
- Personal satisfaction of helping other people
- Stay physically and mentally well
- Have fun
|

Don’t forget that as well as benefiting themselves, every volunteer brings direct and indirect benefits to local communities where they give their time. In 2007 volunteers were worth an estimated £48 billion to the national economy, with more than 70% of adults volunteering in some form or another during the year. Volunteering is a huge part of modern society and you might be very surprised at how you could make a difference too.
